We are pleased to announce the addition of the Picasso Lite; a leading-edge laser system, to our practice. This diode laser has multiple uses, and performs a wide range of soft-tissue surgical, periodontal, and endodontic procedures; all aimed at providing comfortable preventive care and minimally invasive treatment options.  It performs a wide range of soft-tissue surgical, periodontal, and endodontic procedures and is the ideal replacement for an electrosurge. 

One use that we are particularly excited about is laser-assisted bacteria reduction; laser removal of diseased, infected, inflamed, and necrosed soft tissue within the periodontal pocket. This is helpful in treating gum disease, which is linked to many systemic diseases. The Picasso aids in the removal of diseased or inflamed soft tissue in the periodontal pocket to improve clinical indices including: gingival index, gingival bleeding index, probe depth, attachment loss and tooth mobility.

Patients report that laser treatments are much gentler than those administered with an electrosurge and result in little or no recession, swelling, less necrosis, and a quicker post-op healing process. Additionally, laser surgery is substantially less invasive therefore generates less bleeding during the procedure. Lasers are predictable, precise and produce a reduction in the need for suturing.

 Velscope

The VELscope system is the first oral cancer screening device to incorporate fluorescence visualization technology to help detect abnormal tissue , including cancer and precancer.

A way to see what might otherwise be missed. The VELscope system is the first adjunctive device cleared by the FDA and Health Canada to help clinicians see cancerous and precancerous lesions that might not be visible to the naked eye. The VELscope is also the first device cleared to help surgeons determine the appropriate surgical margins if surgery is indicated. This is extremely important, as oral surgery often fails to remove 100% of the targeted tissue.

A detection device—not a diagnostic device. It is important to understand that the VELscope system is not a diagnostic device. It is used to detect tissue that appears to be abnormal. If the dentist is sufficiently suspicious of the tissue detected, a surgical biopsy should be conducted. Only when an oral pathologist reads the results of this surgical biopsy can a diagnosis be made.

Easy for clinicians - and for patients. VELscope exams may be given as part of a normal hygiene exam. The exam is easy for dentists and hygienists to administer, taking only 2-to-3 minutes. It is completely free of pain or discomfort for the patients, and it involves no distasteful rinses or messy dyes.

The VELscope handpiece emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity, causing tissue fluorescence from the surface of the epithelium through to the basement membrane, where pre-malignant changes typically start, and in the stroma beneath. The special, patented optical filtering in the handpiece allows the clinician to immediately view the different fluorescence signatures from the oral tissue to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue. Abnormal tissue, such as dysplasia or cancerous lesions, typically appear as irregular, dark areas that stand out against the otherwise normal, green fluorescence pattern of surrounding healthy tissue. This technology thus helps dental practitioners identify potentially dangerous growths that might be missed with the naked eye.

DIAGNOdent aids in the detections of caries. Even very small lesions are detected at the earliest stage, enabling protection and preservation of the tooth substance.
